An SXGA reflective liquid crystal projection light valve incorporating inversion by pixel bootstrapping
نویسندگان
چکیده
A new experimental SXGA liquid-crystalon-silicon reflective projection light valve is described. It incorporates a novel inversion scheme, the bootstrapped pixel method, which extends the available pixel voltage range with lower applied voltages from the external data driver. This can enable the use of liquid crystal modes and performance-enhancing pixel structures which increase the pixel voltage requirement without incurring the additional cost of higher-voltage technology in the lightvalve chip or the data driver. Alternatively, with present liquid crystal modes and pixel structures, it can permit the use of a denser, lower-voltage silicon process permitting more function on a chip or smaller, less expensive chips. Using the new light valve, the pixels were operated at 12 V peak-to-peak, the technology maximum, with no voltages in the device above 12 V and a data-line voltage range of 6 V. The new method introduces no new image artifacts.

LCOS Spatial Light Modulators: Trends and Applications
Spatial light modulator (SLM) is a general term describing devices that are used to modulate amplitude, phase, or polarization of light waves in space and time. Current SLM–based systems use either optical MEMS (microelectromechanical system, [1]) or LCD technology [2]. In this chapter, we review trends and applications of SLMs with focus on liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) technology. Most dev...

The pixel bootstrapping method is successful to be applied to implement the dot inversion without addition complex controls in LCoS with frame buffer pixels. The relations of common voltage modulation method and bootstrapping method are analyzed. The dot inversion in frame-by-frame addressing method is explained. The dot inversion and the data voltage loss compensation are implemented by bootst...
متن کاملContrast properties of reflective liquid crystal light valves in projection displays
Projectors that use reflective light valves must employ beam splitters or analogous components to separate bright-state light from dark-state light, since both states must propagate in the space above the light valve. Polarization ray tracing shows that such beam splitters will not usually achieve high rejection of dark-state light when the beam has the typical angular divergence of about &IO"....
متن کاملEfficient polarization converter for projection displays.
In the waveguiding limit, a twisted nematic liquid crystal cell behaves as an achromatic polarization rotator. We propose and demonstrate the application of such a polarization rotator to convert unpolarized light into linearly polarized light with almost 100% efficiency. This polarization converter has a 2:1 aspect ratio, which is close to the 16:9 ratio for modern televisions. It can be used ...
متن کاملOptoelectronic Device using a Liquid Crystal Holographic Memory
Recently, the technologies related to liquid crystal spatial light modulators have progressed dramatically [1]–[4]. Such modulators are classifiable as two types: transmissive and reflective. Both types are used widely for various applications, e.g. liquid crystal television panels, personal computer displays, and projector systems. In particular, the resolution of the latest liquid crystal spa...
